Does the time have come for the ideas of degrowth? What does degrowth mean at all, why do we need, and why is there still so much resistance against it? What does the politics of limits has to do with democracy?
Timothée Parrique and Matthias Schmelzer help us make sense of the ecological, social and political challenges of the current systems, to envision alternatives to a sustainable and socially just economic and social order and most importantly, designing ways of how to get there. Two brilliant researchers and intellectuals challenging current reductive views of growth.
Timothée Parrique, born in Versailles in 1989, is an economist and works at the Faculté des Hautes études commerciales at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) in the field of ecological economic research. His doctoral thesis from 2019 deals with the economic impact of degrowth. He is well known in the international degrowth and climate protection movement and is one of the most important critics of the growth principle. His first book “Ralentir ou périr: L'économie de la décroissance” was released in German (Wachstum Bremsen oder Untergehen - Fischer Verlag) in November last year.
Matthias Schmelzer is an economic historian, social theorist and climate activist. He serves as Professor of Social-Ecological Transformation Research and Head of the Norbert Elias Centre for Transformation Design & Research (NEC) at the Flensburg University and is active in various social-ecological networks and movements. Matthias has published The Hegemony of Growth and edited Degrowth in Movement(s). A handbook and a manifesto, his book "The Future Is Degrowth" is a must-read for all interested in charting a way beyond the current crises.
❗️Hosting this event: Luci Maia and Céline Keller, both on a learning journey about degrowth.
